All these music videos were created by me, in my travels around the world and around NYC. The focus is on World Music but that covers a lot these days....and every so often I sneak in a little jazz!
Debapriya Adhikary, Samanwaya Sarkar and Madhurjya Ranjan Barthakur perform a Song of Return.
This is the second song that the trio performed for me privately at the hotel they were staying in. To recap, I have attended and attempted to document the Sharq Taronalari Festival in Samarkand for several years in a row. Each time I have been frustrated by promises to deliver the board audio that never materialize. So this time around, I determined that wherever possible I would get informal performances at the hotel where many of the musicians were staying. In this case, it is the Indian trio of Debapriya Adhikary on vocal, Samanwaya Sarkar on sitar, and Madhurjya Ranjan Barthakur on tabla. I am no expert on the subject of Indian music, so once again, I will leave it to Samanwaya to explain the music.
"This is a piece based on RAAG Madhuwanti which is an early evening melody set in Char Taal ki Sawari (11beats). The lyric says "Lagire Lagana Tose Shubho Shagoon Ayee Balma" which means "My husband has come home after a long time; it is a very joyous and pious moment for me."
This is most assuredly a showcase piece that displays the formidable command of voice and instruments displayed by all three musicians.

"Hiraeth am Feirion" performed by Ffynon
I met the band Ffynnon in of all places, Uzbekistan, where they were performing at the Sharq Taronalari festival. I fell in love with Lynne Denman’s beautiful voice, and later found myself singing along with the band, as I reviewed the video footage I had taken of them. As it turned out I spent 8 days in South Wales the next month, and that gave me the opportunity to capture two songs by the ba...
Show of Hands Plays The Best Halloween Song I Have Ever Heard

“Go light the lantern at your door And honor those who’ve gone before The worlds that part us now are twain For Hallow’s Eve is here again.” I had the great pleasure of attending the English Folk Expo or EFEx back in 2014. Although I love English folk music, I had never heard of a single artist that performed during those three intensive days. I found the the level of musicianship to be amazing...
RUUT live at the Sharq Taronalari Festival, Samarkand

The Sharq Taronalari Festival festival takes place in Samarkand Uzbekistan, every tow years, and is billed as an international music festival. Its main attraction for me is that one gets to hear a wide variety of music from the east, particularly Central Asia and its immediate environs. But it also welcomes music from other countries more far afield, from the USA to the island of Fiji. Getting ...
Intro to Sharq Taronalari Festival: projected mini documentary; pending audio from the festival.

I attended the Festival of International music (Sharq Taronalari) held every two years in the city of Samarkand Uzbekistan. Armed only with two consumer grade camcorders, I have been hopeful of creating a mini documentary of the performances and experiences of my trip. the completion of this documentary is dependent on obtaining audio from the festival. It has been eight months since the Festiv...
Akbar Khamisu Khan at Sharq Taronalari
There are two performances in this video; one in Mr. Khan's hotel room from a rehearsal, and one from his performance at the 21019 Sharq Taronalari Festival in Samarkand. Pakistan's Akhbar Khamisu Khan, plays the alghoza, a double flute. One flute plays a drone while the other plays melody and as one might expect, it requires circular breathing to keep the sound going. Although his father was a...
Grace Petrie: Singing Truth to Power
Grace Petrie sang this song as part of the performance by Coven (a feminist collective) at the English Folk Expo, which takes place in Manchester, UK. The words are by Ms. Petrie, and her performance blew me away. Thanks Grace Petrie, for giving me permission to post it. The melody is traditional, the words are hers. The sentiment is universal, or should be. I posted this on the eve of 2018 mid...
Toko Telo performs Diavola at WOMEX 2018
There was a definite frisson at WOMEX for Toko Telo, a Malagasy Trio with two acknowledged stars. For me, that frisson was mostly due to guitarist D’Gary. Of all the world music in my collection, Dama and D’Gary’s “The Long Way Home” is the only disk that my guitarist partner seems to enjoy hearing. That’s actually quite reasonable, since it is a guitarist’s dream of acoustic sounds, and I love...
Harbottle and Jonas at EFEx sing of Scott of the Antarctic
In the midst of the delegate’s dinner at the English Folk Expo (EFEx), the duo of Harbottle and Jonas bravely presented a few songs. I say bravely, because diverting people from food, wine and business schmoozing is a challenging task, and odds of success are low. But after the first few chords, the room quieted somewhat - partly out of respect for the musicians but also for the dignity of the ...
Ranky Tanky at WOMEX
Ranky Tanky mines the repertoire of the Gullahs, and their enclave in South Carolina. The Gullahs have maintained a distinctive oral tradition with recognizable roots from West Africa, manifested in work songs, children’s songs, and dances. Gullah band member Quiana Parler is a titanic singer, but beyond an awesome set of pipes, she is steeped in a tradition that gives her music an honesty and ...
Elkin Robinson

Elkin Robinson from the Island of Old Providence off the coast of Colombia, sings Yemanyà, at WOMEX 2017. There is a distinctly Island feel to this music, and the use of a jawbone and washtub bass is part of a charming tradition that still lives there.
Luciana Jury at WOMEX
Luciana Jury was one of the day case acts at WOMEX 2017, and she started her solo show off-mic, entering from the audience area and walking and singing to the stage. This was the start of a series of extremely emotional songs, wherein Ms. Jury used her vocal flexibility to make each song a small theater piece. This kind of dramatization is not for everyone, but when Ms. Jury sang “Lola” I knew ...
WoWaKin at WOMEX 2017
WOMEX 2017 was held in Katowice, Poland, and WoWaKin was one of the bands among a real treasure trove of new and old Polish music to be heard. I came in too late to catch them playing a full-tilt mazurka, (you will hear the last few notes of one in the beginning of the video) but they are a great dance band if you know the dances, and there were plenty of folks swirling about in the aisles and ...
Kweskin & Muldaur at Joe's Pub
Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur have been performing-or as they would say “uncovering” country style blues, ragtime and jugband music since the folk revival of the 60’s. I made it a point to see them when they played at Joe’s Pub this past October of 2016. I was gratified to see them both looking almost unchanged except for some greyed hair and they both sounded marvelous. The show was a program ...

Came across this today - really enjoyed it😘😘😘
I really think this is a good song with a nice message but at the same time I don't think people should forget that John Ball and his associates were murderous lunatics who were motivated almost entirely by hatred of people higher on the social pecking order than them.
Yes, that is true! There is little I can say to deny it, but only to unravel it a bit...the times were harsh, and the line between the haves and have-nots was often the difference between eating and not eating. The government was an absolute monarchy, the caste system was rigid, and how much actual justice was there to be had? The human hind brain is competitive, and for some the notion that one person would think they are "better" than another is intolerable. It's NO excuse for murder, but then again, strangling, drawing and quartering seems extreme in our time, no? To re-iterate, historically Mr. Ball and his followers were no angels! But the song is terrific and I give kudos to Mr. Carton for extracting the best part of Ball's message.
Wonderful song! A lot of people in my area think it's a Christmas song, maybe because of "carol like a lark" and the Biblical references. It's a great song for any time but it's really a June song.
Asadharon laglo.
Fab!

Yes, John Ball died a hero. Thank you for reminding us, Sherlock. Now, Mojo, see if you can figure out the point of this song for us.
"Mojo?" "us?" Rather a cryptic comment. 8 years ago, you rather liked the video, now I am not sure what the heck you are getting at.
@@MichalShapiro1949 I love the video, the performance, the song, the meaning of the song. Somebody named Mojo Mojo said John Ball is dead dude. So my comment refers to his comment which I think is ridiculous. So I am being facetious when I call him Sherlock but I do call him by his name and ask him to help us figure out the meaning of the song. And I'm facetious in asking that. Maybe I should have just replied to him and said, no kidding, Sherlock. Way to miss the point of the song. Sorry for the confusion. The Melrose quartet absolutely rocked that great song! I listen to it a lot. I am grateful that you posted the video.
Ahhh. OK I understand. On my computer your remark to Mojo did not appear as a reply, but as a stand-alone comment. I am relieved 🙂.
